Jan married Hillegond Willemsen Van Buren in 1675 in Kingston, Ulster County, New York. (Hillegond Willemsen Van Buren was born about 1650 in Kingston, Ulster County, New York.) Marriage Notes: Cornelis Maessen Van Bruyen or Van Buren was one of the party who sailed for the New World on the ship Endracht in 1631. He came from the Province of Glederland, from the small place called Burmalse near the town of Buren, a few miles from the Rhine. Patronymic names were not used among either the English or Dutch settlers, but about 1664 the English commenced to use them and the Dutch soon followed. Cornelis signed himself as Cornelis Maessen meaning son of Maes. His son Marten was the first to use the surname of Van Buren. Cornelis Maessen and his wife died on the same day in 1648, leaving five children. Cornelis theunis and Theunis Direxsz inhabitants of the colony became their guardians. cornelis Theuniz came with Cornelis as his servant. The Van Buren's owned property in Manhattan located at the North River on the island of Manhattan next to Wouter Van Twiller and Thomas Hall. It was located between the present day Christopher and fourteenth Streets with a North River frontage. |
