• Notes of Interest. In the Netherlands there is a debate as to who was the “first” Lord of Arkel. What is not in dispute is the story that a man by the name of Heijman was in fact an historical character who resided in Arkel in the tenth century:

The name Heijman traces back to a story of a brave man, who in the tenth century served Emperor Otto the Great of Hungary. Because of his stouthearted actions he made himself liked to such extent that the emperor sent him to East-Friesland to serve Tieleman, who was the landlord of that region, as a governor of Neder-Frieland, presently province of the Netherlands. He married the daughter of Tieleman, named Silla or Gella, and departed to Holland. There he became a favorite of the counts of Holland and Teisterband, who gave him some lands situated at the Linge which later were unified under the name of “Land of Arkel”. Arkel, earlier called Arclo, is very old. In 641 already a church was founded and it is said that Heijman settled himself in the tenth century and that his son Foppo built a castle. It is

Heijman means “hero on his own inheritance” or perhaps better-said “hero on his (own) inherited territory”. The name can be found in the area around Dordrecht from as early as 1284 and might actually have been a form of Hendrick from Heynderic.

• Tax List, 1614. 333 My name is listed on the tax rolls for Andel.
