• death, 14 Jul 1896. When Burton was approaching the end of his teen years he became interested in a young lady in Cortland. The young woman didn't have the same affection for him that he had for her. Meanwhile, Burton had taken a job plowing for a neighbor. On a hot day in July of 1896, he fought with his emotions and thoughts while tending to his job of plowing and working with the horses. He completed his work in the late afternoon. He carefully cared for the horses, cleaning and combing them down and drying them off before he fed them. He cleaned the machinery and then hung up the harnesses and put away the other items with which he had worked. He then took a bridle from one of the workhorses and hung himself in the barn. Burton's life ended on July 14, 1896 at the age of 20. However, while he believed his life didn't have purpose - it did and in time there would have been another young woman who would have appreciated him for who he was.
We quietly buried our son as a family.
