The Bieri name was derived from the French first name Pierre (Peter). Ulrich's ancestors were known as Welsh Cheesemakers from Gruyeres. The Bieri family migrated into Switzerland between 1550 and 1600's. They came by arrangement with the local nobles who ruled the Emmenthal after the reformation. The nobles were seeking experienced cheese makers. Ulrich married Anna Langenegger, daughter of Hans Michael Langenegger and Barbara (Anna) Neuenschwander, about 1716 in Schangnau, Bern, Switzerland.
