• Occupation: hired hand: Barkey, Gage County, Nebraska. 2 Monroe never went to school, so he could neither read nor write. He lived in the Barkey, Nebraska area working as a hired hand

• Education. Monroe did not have a good education. In order to keep track of his financial accounts, he would keep corn kernals in his pocket and would use them to help him add and subtract.

• Property: a donkey. 2 Monroe Stanley bought a donkey for his grandchildren Cline, Orpha, Daniel and Marian Barkey and another donkey for Clarence and Mona Stanley's children. The Frank Barkey's and Clarence and Mona Stanley lived a mile apart and the donkeys would call to each other. The Barkey's donkey had a colt that was named Dolly.

• Property: land, 1914, Haxtun, Phillips County, Colorado.

• Childhood. Monroe Stanley was six years old when his parents divorced and he headed west with his mother and grandfather, Robert Stanley. The cause of the divorce was due to Monroe K. Stanley having a drinking problem.

It is thought that Amelia Gifford, her husband and children went with them at the same time. The 1880 census shows Amelia and George Gifford in Nebraska in 1880. George Gifford was born to Amelia in 1875.

Monroe ran away from home. The 1880 census shows that Monroe was living with Henry Jones. Monroe was 16 years when the census was taken.

• Habit, of helping others. Monroe helped many settlers in the area get settled. He let them stay in his home; he fed them, their horses and cattle. Monroe Morris Stanley was known for being very generous and liked to help other people. At first he had a lot of land but little by little he had to sell it off to make ends meet and finally ended up with almost nothing. Laura was the business head of the family but Monroe didn't always take her advice.

It was a custom at Monroe and Laura's church for a person having a birthday to go up to the front at Sunday school and put in their birthday money. Monroe liked to put his money in, in pennies. As he grew older it took a long time for him to change in 60 some pennies
