Susannah Ziegler

  Noted events in her life were:

• Habit. ² Guy Stamm who was the grandson of Susan Ziegler, told Marian Christenson that his mother smoked a pipe. Susan got started because her mother Susanna would send her to the hot coals in the fireplace to get a light for her pipe.

• Biography. ¹⁶³ Susannah was a member of the Mennonite church and a woman of many virutes, whose life has indeed been well spent.

Susannah married Jacob Stamm in 1836 in Beaver County, Pennsylvania. (Jacob Stamm was born in 1811 in Franklin Township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania and died on 27 May 1892.)

  Noted events in their marriage were:

• Moved. After our marriage, we made our home in Harmony, Butler County, Pennsylvania where we lived for one year before moving to Evans City, Pennsylvania.

  Marriage Notes:

DANIEL STAMM and his father settled in Franklin township, Beaver county, close to the Butler county line, where the latter died and was interred upon the homestead. Daniel grew up on the farm settled by his father, and remained with his parents until his marriage to Elizabeth SHEARER, to which union were born the following children: Conrad; Jacob; John; Daniel; Mary, who married Henry SHANOR; Susan, wife of Zeno MARKEL, of Evans City, and Eliza, who became the wife of a Eli HARTZELL. The parents died upon the homestead farm, where the greater portion of their lives was passed.

JACOB STAMM, Sr., son of Daniel STAMM, was born in November, 1811, upon the old homestead, learned the tanner's trade, and followed that occupation for several years. In 1887 he purchased the farm in Forward township, consisting of 212 acres, to which he afterwards added seventy-eight acres, upon which his sons, Solomon and Jacob now live. Mr. STAMM cleared and improved this farm. In early life he was a Democrat, but upon the formation of the Republican party he joined that organization. He was one of the pioneer member of St. John's Reformed church of Evans City. He married Susan, daughter of Christopher ZIEGLER, of Beaver county, who became the mother of eight children: Deborah, wife of George WISE; Abraham; Kesiah, wife of Casper BEHM; Elizabeth, wife of Joseph PEFFER; Solomon; Mary, wife of John Milton WHITE; Susan, wife of Jonathan WILSON, and Jacob. Mr. STAMM died May 27, 1892; his widow resides upon the homestead farm. She is a member of the Mennonite church.

Jacob Stamm received a very limited education and became an enterpirsing business man. In 1836 he wedded Susan Ziegler, the ceremony being performed in Beaver County, Pennsylvania. Susan was born in bucks county March 31, 1810. After his marriage Jacob Stamm located at Harmony, Butler County, Pennsylvania where he lived for one year then removed to Evans City, twenty seven miles north of Pittsburg, where his father had purchased two hundred and twelve acres of land, having also a tract of six hundred acres in Muddy Creek township, Butler County and two hundred acres in Middlesex Township, Butler County. this land he gave to his children, Jacob Stamm securing the tract of two hundred and twelve acres. Only a small portion had been cleared, the remainder having been covered with heavy timber. Clearing away the trees, Jacob Stamm developed a good farm, erected substantial buildings, and there spent his remaining days, his death occuring May 27, 1892, when he had attained the age of eighty years. He was a member of the German Reformed church and in politics was originally a Democrat, but in 1864 supported Abraham Lincoln and was afterward a staunch Republican. He was known as a substantial farmer and became the owner of a valuable property of three hundred acres. His wife is still living on the old homestead and is past ninety years of age. She is a member of the Mennonite church and a woman of many virutes, whose life has indeed been well spent.

JACOB STAMM, youngest son of Jacob and Susan STAMM, was born January 12, 1851, upon the homestead farm in Forward township. He received a common school education, and has always been engaged in farming, carrying on the farm in partnership with his brother Solomon. HE is a mem- [p. 1134] ber of the Baptist church, and in politics, he is a Prohibitionist. Mr. STAMM is one of the leading citizens of Forward township, and, like his brother, takes an active interest in the growth and development of the community.
